Did you know that Waverly is turning 90 years old? They must be doing things right, keeping a strong longevity making linens, stationery, fabric, wallpaper, and more. Waverly has some beautiful home decor fabrics available at Jo-Ann Fabrics. I just used some to make this beautiful yet sturdy messenger bag.
The Jo-Ann folks sent me a couple yards of Waverly Button Blooms Spa, a 100% cotton home decor print. My challenge was to transform something in my life through sewing using this Waverly fabric. Well, I happen to be in the final stages of designing my own messenger bag pattern, so a messenger bag it is! I gathered my Waverly fabric and some linen, and started to play, err “work” 😉
Simply gorgeous fabric, huh? I love the cool colors. And the blue is so “me”. Home decor fabrics make a nice and strong bag, while keeping things stylin’. Though pretty heavy, the home decor fabric is easy to handle and the non-directional print made sewing easy.
White all-purpose thread worked great throughout – I love not having to change thread in a project. I used a 12 Sharp/Microtex sewing machine needle at the beginning, then switched to a 16 Jeans/Denim needle later in the bag assembly as the layers began to build.
Also, the blind hem presser foot works great for perfectly straight edgestitching, FYI.
Linen sides and a pretty little linen pleat 🙂
My comp book day planner and my iPad fit nicely. A dotted quilting cotton worked great for the lining.
The front and back exterior pockets would hold a Kindle, iPad mini, Moleskine journal, or a paperback book.
I’ve made a few prototypes of this bag, but this is the first time I’ve used home dec fabric. I LOVE the results. A heavy-duty bag, for sure! I also love that there is absolutely no hardware on this thing. All you need is fabric and thread 🙂 And the handle is adjustable – just tie it in a knot to your desired length.
I just might be super-close to being ready for pattern testers. If you’d like to volunteer your time to make this bag for yourself, contact me. You would receive the PDF sewing pattern, make the bag and share your honest feedback, and send me digital pics of the finished bag to share on my blog.
