Platform Planner – Focus on Your Strengths

Platform Planner Your Strengths

We spend a lot of time trying to fix our weaknesses.  There are tons of products and services designed to help people overcome their shortcomings.  And we eagerly snatch them up, all in an effort to improve ourselves.

But what if we focus on our strengths, rather than spending most of our time trying to improve our weaknesses?  If you’re a rockstar guitar player, would you spend most of your time trying to excel at the flute?

This step of the Platform Planner series will help you focus on your strengths.

  1. Read the first 31 pages of StrengthsFinder 2.0, a book by Tom Rath.  (If you decide to not read this book, I suppose you can just estimate your top strengths.  Just note that I HIGHLY recommend you read this book to make this series more meaningful to you.)  For more info, read my Review of StrengthsFinder 2.0.
  2. Take the online survey at www.strengthsfinder.com, following the book instructions.  It will take you about 30 minutes.
  3. Read the applicable sections in Part II of the book “Applying Your Strengths”, now that you are armed with the 5 areas where you have the greatest potential.
  4. Go back to the website and print the PDF “Strengths Insight and Action-Planning Guide”.
  5. Cut out both the “Personalized Strengths Insights” and the “Ideas for Action” sections and glue to the 4th – 13th pages of your comp book.  Order them so that your top strength appears on pages 4-5, your second strength on pages 6-7, and so on.  Yes, I know, you skipped a few pages in the comp book.  Don’t worry, you’ll be using pages 2-3 for online tool tracking.
  6. Write down the words or phrases that stand out to you, and/or highlight them.

Isn’t it empowering to have such insight into your strengths and talents?  Try spending more time on these strengths, rather than fixing your weaknesses, and see what happens!

Love your web site & platform planner. I found you when looking for ideas on how to use my comp book as a planner, I always keeps notes in my comp book and have never found a planner that I could keep all my notes in. I like the post it idea and not having to carry two around.

My church did the Strength Finder book study & everyone loved it. Might I ask – what your top 5 were? Here’s mine: Strategic, Ideation, Connectedness, Learner, Input. It totally makes my lives decisions to date, make so much sense!

    Keep up the great blogging!

Thanks, Laura! I love your top 5 strengths! I’m not surprised that as a Strategic, you like your planner. And as a Ideation you track your ideas in a comp book 🙂

My top strengths are Relator, Achiever, Futuristic, Discipline, and Individualization. I agree with you, my strengths make so much sense to me, looking back on my life so far. And knowing this gives me such helpful insight for my future!
